Home › Water Heater Winter Preparation
Indiana winter is when water heaters work hardest — incoming water arrives near freezing, sediment-choked tanks strain to keep up, and the failures cluster in the coldest weeks. An hour of preparation in the fall prevents the most common winter breakdowns. This is the checklist our own technicians use.

1) Flush a few gallons (or a full drain) to clear sediment before heating season. 2) Check the anode rod if it has been 3+ years — replacing a spent rod in October beats replacing a tank in January. 3) Test the T&P relief valve's lever for free movement (with a bucket under the discharge pipe). 4) Set temperature to 120°F — hot enough, safer, and easier on the tank. 5) Insulate exposed supply lines in garages, crawlspaces and exterior walls; a pipe freeze near the heater is a flood, not an inconvenience. 6) Clear the area around the unit — storage crept against a gas flue or air intake all summer. 7) Know your shut-offs: label the cold supply valve and breaker now, in daylight, not during a December leak. We can do the full list in one service visit if you prefer.
It is not the cold alone — it is load. Showers run longer, laundry doubles with guests, and inlet water 20 degrees colder means the burner or elements run far longer per gallon. Marginal parts that survived summer fail under winter duty. The fall service visit exists precisely to find them while they are still cheap and the schedule is still calm.

October to early November in Westfield — before the first hard freezes and before emergency schedules fill with the first cold snap's failures.
For extended absences, many homeowners set the unit to vacation/low, keep heat on in the home, and arrange a check-in. Fully draining is a decision to make together during a service visit, depending on your home's plumbing — ask us rather than improvising.
On older units in cold spaces, an insulating blanket can trim standby loss — but never cover the top of a gas unit, its flue, or controls. Pipe insulation on exposed lines is the higher-value move in most Westfield homes.
